Bankekod (Stewed Beef)

This simple dish is very popular in Denmark and is usually eaten with mashed potatoes.
Lean beef is cut into slices about 1 inch thick, browned in butter, sprinkled with a alittle flour and seasoned with salt, peppercorns, and bayleaves.
When browned, the meat is put in a saucepan with sufficient water to cover and simmered for 1 1/2 hours.
